Australian Idol

Doesn't time fly when you're having fun? It's been five years since the inaugural season of Idol but not all the winners have gone on to become stars. It's had its fair share of controversy too (who can forget Paulini's dress?) but the format hasn't died yet. This season includes, for the first time, off-shore Aussie expats. Marcia Hines, Kyle Sandilands and Ian Dickson judge.

@crispin : I must confess that this year's talent has me hooked again (last year almost lost me there). Wez and Spano will battle it out and I have been backing Wez all the way as I have no doubt he will make a great artist. Cant say I am too fond of the Monday Night changes having the contestants each re-sing their bad performances. Lucky I just record it and fast forward to the verdict!!!

@mattk : The eighth season of American Idol will premiere in January 2009. There are currently over 50 versions in 110 countries - so it doesn't look like being dropped - anywhere - just now. UK's 'The X Factor', Idol's UK replacement since 2003, is currently broadcasting its fifth series. It premiered on 16 August 2008. Reportedly, 182,000 people applied to be contestants, and the format doesn' look like being dropped anytime soon either.

surely this is the last year for Idol? The UK and America have both dropped it... why can't we?
